Quote from Parent

“Two years ago we moved 3 of our children to SLC, after oureldest was attacked in a local school. We couldn’t believe the difference a school full of wonderful teachers who really loved their jobs could make. We watched our children bloom, flourish and absolutely relish every part of school life. SLC quickly recognised and diagnosed my eldest who is 11 years old and has developmental language delay (which had previously gone unnoticed). The school immediately put things into place to help Max understand more and we witnessed them unlock a very bright little boy who had been left to muddle through for so long.

We kept him at SLC for secondary school as it became theplace we fully trusted, and we knew this was the school that he needed; the teachers understand his needs, he loves everything about the school and feels confident at last.

We are now faced with trying to find a school to accommodatethree children aged 11,8 and 6. We don’t know how we will manage the commute, all of our children are worried about their schooling future, about losing their friends, not seeing their teachers again, and about not ever coming back to the school they have fallen in love with and has become their second home.

I don’t know what to do, what to say or how to deal withsuch a loss to our family. I can’t see a way we will find another school like SLC”

Quote from Community

“Broadstairs Cricket Club use the school sports centre to provide winter Cricket training for both our Junior and Adult sections. Running from Halloween to Easter, this is vital for player development and fund-raising. The partnership we have with the school is invaluable. If the Sports Centre becomes inaccessible for us, then we will suffer immeasurably. Over 130 playing members of our club will be negatively impacted by its closure. It is a vital community facility.”

Sam Fellowes, Junior Co-ordinator at Broadstairs Cricket Club

Facts & Figures

There will be significant local impact from the closure of St. Lawrence College.

  • More than 500 students of all age groups are being displaced from their school. Dover College simply does not have the capacity or facilities to welcome both student bodies by September. Students across primary, secondary and sixth form stages have already passed key application deadlines for alternative schools, leaving families facing immediate uncertainty about their options.
  • With upwards of 200 staff on site St Lawrence College is the largest single employer in Ramsgate – this will have a devastating impact on the work force.

Below is a list of the clubs and societies across Thanet to whom these facilities are absolutely vital and do not exist elsewhere:
